An initially unknown alcoholic driver started a major search in St. Johann in Tirol on Thursday evening: after the man had left a trail of destruction and ended up in the ditch with his BMW, he fled. After an hours-long operation, the wanted man – a 30-year-old German – was finally found very drunk at his workplace in the early hours.
Around 1 a.m., a witness reported to the police in St. Johann that a traffic accident had occurred at the Speckbacherstrasse/Römerweg intersection, in which the car got stuck in the adjacent ditch. “The witness also stated that he had seen an apparently heavily intoxicated man who had run away from the scene of the accident at an unnoticed moment,” the investigators said.
Damaged signs, uprooted trees
On the way to the scene of the accident, the alerted patrol finally discovered about 50 meters of damaged road signs, Traffic signs, uprooted small trees and broken wooden posts. However, there was no trace of the driver of the accident.
„Due to the low temperatures and the driver’s unknown state of health, a search was immediately started, including assistance dogs, police helicopters and the fire brigade,” the police said. However, the driver remained missing.
Emergency services found a man at work
In the meantime, both the registration holder and his home and work address could be established. Assistance dog “Eco” was also able to track down the driver of the car. At around 05:30 the signal was finally given: the wanted man, a 30-year-old German, was found unharmed at his workplace.
„An alcohol test performed showed a strong alcoholization. The 30-year-old is being reported to the responsible authorities for various administrative offences,” the detectives said.
