Out of the blue, a 27-year-old just grabbed a student’s buttocks. As if that wasn’t enough, he also got aggressive towards a female subway passenger and pushed her against the wall. He doesn’t want to remember most of it. He was drugged. To the judge: “A very clear case of sexual harassment!”
Tuesday began like any other day: the young woman was on her way to college. Regularly taken the U3 towards Simmering. “Suddenly I felt someone grab my bottom,” she said on the witness stand in Vienna’s court. When she turned around, she was presented with the image of a 27-year-old groping her unabashedly.
Second victim terrified
During a confrontation, he then became aggressive. He attacked a woman who rushed to help: with full force he pushed her shoulders against the wall of the subway and pushed her into the corner. “Since then I’ve been afraid to go out in public. If possible, I just stay at home.” According to the victim’s written statement, the woman did not appear as a witness at the trial.
The Algerian tries to justify himself to trainee judge Nikolai Nikolic and judge Stefan Apostol: “I thought this woman was my friend.” And how did this fatal mix-up come about? He smoked cannabis that day. “I’m not used to marijuana. We don’t have that in Algeria,” he insists, attributing the groping and aggressive behavior to a drug-related lack of control.
“Grabs Butts on a Whim”
The judge sees it differently. The suspect “just grabbed the woman by the ass on a whim”. Due to sexual harassment, attempted bodily harm and coercion of the aid workers, this means a five-month suspended sentence, not legally binding. He must pay the victims 1,000 euros and 1,240 euros in compensation.
The 27-year-old was released with immediate effect, but was immediately transferred to detention pending deportation. The Algerian has been staying illegally in Austria for some time now.
