Can you transfer it to me?”: From the fall of 2021, scammers managed to fool dozens of people and defraud hundreds of thousands of euros with such messages, including sending account information via WhatsApp. According to the prosecutor’s indictment, it involved 542,000 euros and 146 victims in just three months, with some of the frauds being just an attempt.
The suspect only wants SIM cards and bank accounts
One of these criminals would be the suspect, a drug addict from Salzburg (22). The systematic fraud started three days after he left prison in September 2021: “Young people and the homeless were persuaded to buy prepaid cards. After that, older victims were targeted using the daughter-son trick, i.e. under the pretext of false identities, ”explains the public prosecutor.
“There were extra people to write”
Other people’s bank accounts were used for the transfers. That is why the ex-girlfriend was in court: she had made her account and that of family members available. In court, the four-time convict admitted ten of the 146 cases: “These are the cases where I got the money.” He didn’t write the messages at all, he just got bills and SIM cards. “There were extra people for writing.”
The 22-year-old also reported on a possible lender from Pakistan. However, the prosecutor also noted: “With her arrest, the close Salzburg connection of the deeds ceased.” He was not legally sentenced to two and a half years in prison. The ex also received a 15-month suspended prison sentence.
