People still rescued – satellite images show devastation in Turkey

Date:

67,000 people are expected to die after the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey. Thousands of buildings have collapsed in 10 provinces in Turkey. Current satellite images show the extent of the destruction. Emergency services will continue to rescue people from the rubble on Thursday.

However, the chance of finding survivors decreases every hour. A person can go without water for about 72 hours. As of Thursday, more than three days have passed since the earthquake.

Children rescued after 84 hours
There are still some exceptions. Two brothers, aged five and 11, have been rescued from the rubble in southeastern Turkey. Both children were taken to hospital, NTV broadcaster reports Thursday. Photos showed the brothers being wrapped in thermal blankets and taken away. Rescue workers in Kahramanmaras province first heard voices and then focused on the collapsed building under which the brothers were buried.

There was also good news from Hatay province on Thursday. There, according to the state news agency Andadolu, three people were pulled alive from under the rubble after 84 hours. The rescuers are currently fighting against the clock in both Turkey and Syria.

Building regulations not observed
A video (see above) shows satellite images from southeast Turkey, where thousands of houses have collapsed. As reported, building regulations were repeatedly not adhered to. More than 20,000 deaths were reported Thursday evening. In addition, about 70,000 people have been injured so far.

Rescue workers from Austria had already rescued three people on Thursday evening. They worked on two collapsed houses where dogs had attacked. Knocking sounds came from a basement. “We have 100 hours to get as many people out of the rubble as possible,” said spokesman Pierre Kugelweis, who is deployed to Hatay province.
