Unusual mission – WEGA rescued hikers from Leopoldsberg in Vienna

Date:

A French woman, a Viennese man and an Italian go for a walk: a really good joke with a decent slap on the thigh could actually start like this or something like that. However, what happened to the aforementioned uneven trio over the weekend in Vienna falls more into the “bad joke” category.

A 49-year-old Italian and his two somewhat older companions – a 67-year-old Frenchwoman and a Viennese (73) – probably left quite late on Saturday for an extensive trip over the Leopoldsberg. Now the ascent to the smaller brother of Kahlenberg (484 meters) and Hermannskogel (542 meters) at only 425 meters altitude is not exactly considered a mountaineering masterpiece among connoisseurs.

Lost in the dark
And yet he would be the downfall of the presumably inexperienced trio of mountaineers. Because around 5 p.m., one of the three day trippers made an emergency call to the police. As darkness fell, the trio became so unluckily lost that they could not move forward or backward on rough terrain near a via ferrata.

It was immediately clear to the police that the helicopter would have to be deployed in addition to patrols for such an unusual operation. “The pilot of the helicopter was then able to direct the intervening officers to the exact location of the tractors,” said police spokeswoman Barbara Gass. But the difficulties did not stop there.

Saved by a winch
WEGA rope technicians had to spectacularly rescue the three hikers from the steep terrain with a rope winch. After all, no one was injured in the prevented victory at the summit. The trio will have lost their wanderlust – at least for now…
