A woman from Burgenland owes her life to the perfect interplay between the rescue service on the ground and the rescue service from the air. Because the woman had fallen badly and had to be flown to hospital with life-threatening hypothermia after first aid by the ÖAMTC emergency medical helicopter Christophorus 33.
Dramatic scenes took place in Mattersburg in the evenings over the weekend. A woman fell outside in freezing temperatures for an initially unknown cause and suffered serious head injuries.
Acute danger to life
Only after some time was the 60-year-old found by her family. But at that time, the body temperature of the woman from Burgenland had already dropped to about 20 degrees! Due to this severe hypothermia, the victim of the accident was in acute danger of dying – there was also a risk of cardiac arrhythmias.
Flying intensive care unit sent to emergency room
The coordinator of the state security center immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation when he received the emergency call from the desperate relatives. In addition to the executive and a Red Cross rescue vehicle, the ÖAMTC intensive care transport helicopter Christophorus 33, based in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria), was also sent to the emergency site. “This flying intensive care unit is equipped, among other things, with a special device that allows our team to warm up infusions before they are administered to the patients,” explains a spokesman for the air rescue to the “Krone”.
The modern H135 helicopter was airborne a few minutes after the alarm. The pilot skillfully placed the machine in the dark in a meadow near a residential area. After urgent medical first aid, the wife of Christophorus 33 was flown to the hospital in St. Pölten.
