The LAB union has denounced that the pay gap in jobs of the same category can reach 90% and that men earn almost twice as much as women.

LAB presented its analysis of the gender pay gap at a press conference in San Sebastián on the occasion of the International Day against the gender pay gap. Specifically, it has made a comparison between different similarities to analyze, study the gap jobs in the same category, some masculinized and others feminized: construction, metallurgy and street cleaning (masculine sectors) and food trade, nursing homes and room cleaners (feminized). The data shows that wages in masculinized sectors they can be 90% higher to that of the feminized.

LAB’s feminist secretary, Maddi Isasi, has given a specific example: “The construction warehouse worker in Gipuzkoa earns 90, 30% more than the worker in nursing homes of the same category. Therefore, the man in two comparable jobs has almost twice the woman’s salary* “.

In addition, the men from the Basque Country They charge an average of 6,200 euros more (23%) than women.

Isasi adds that this does not mean that the salaries of the masculinized sectors are very high, but they are the salaries of the feminized sectors are very low. To all this we must add that in the group of employees who do not arrange their employment conditions through an employment contract, 3 out of 4 are women.

Garbine Aranburu, LAB coordinator, has stressed that “the jobs that women do are devalued, they are given less value”. Aranburu advocates “ending the division of labor between men and women” and recognizing, redistributing and revaluing all jobs. It also calls for correcting the patriarchal debt owed to women and closing the pension gap.

In addition, LAB has announced mobilizations on February 22 in Bilbao (11:00 am, from the Basque government to employers) and Pamplona (11:30 am in front of the parliament).
