Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is hoping for a decision on further arms transfers to his country at the meeting of the so-called Ukraine Contact Group on Tuesday in Brussels. “We are working to ensure that all of our negotiations are reflected in our partners’ arms decisions,” Zelenskyj said in a video address Monday night. “New bilateral talks and meetings are planned.”
On Tuesday, the defense ministers of the 30 NATO countries will meet in Brussels. One of the topics will be the war in Ukraine. Prior to the meeting, the United States will organize contact group consultations in the morning. Arms deliveries to Kiev are coordinated through the so-called Ramstein format – named after the US air base in Germany as the site of several meetings in Ukraine. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov is also expected. Following the commitments for main battle tanks from the West, Ukraine is currently pushing for the delivery of fighter jets in particular.
A few days after a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Zelenskyi called the talks “very intense”. “The three of us spoke very openly with each other. That has enabled us to find a common understanding of the prospects in this war.” He thanked Macron and Scholz for their support. “We have a common vision on the road to victory,” Zelenskyj emphasized.
