“Certainly not great” – the ballet director takes a position after the fecal attack

Date:

After attacking a critic with dog feces, the head of the ballet at the Hanover State Opera made a public statement. The choice of funds was “definitely not great,” he said. In retrospect, Marco Goecke knew it was an overreaction.

“I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to all concerned, first of all to Ms. Hüster, for my absolutely unacceptable action,” the 50-year-old said in a written statement. “There is a moment when I feel personally attacked,” said Marco Goecke in an interview with Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). He was “a little shocked” about himself, but he and his work had been “dirty” by the critic Wiebke Hüster “over the years”.

What happened? As reported, the German ballet director smeared dog poop on the face of the dance critic “FAZ” during a break in the Saturday night premiere. The director of the State Ballet allegedly attacked her verbally beforehand and accused her of being responsible for canceling subscriptions.

As is now known, the reason for the attack was a review by Hüster that appeared a few days ago about one of his choreographies, which is currently being performed by the renowned Nederlandse Dans Theater. In the article, which can also be read on the internet, she called the production a “disgrace and cheek” and wrote that the viewers were “alternately insane and dead of boredom”.

Reviews on “level of a turd”
The reviews are “on the level of a turd”, according to Goecke. It was a “coincidence” that he got hold of dog poop. During the confrontation, Goecke had a bag with his dog’s legacies, which he really only wanted to get rid of. “In retrospect, I realize that this was an embarrassing act of affection and an overreaction,” Goecke said in a written statement on Tuesday.

He was suspended immediately after the incident and was banned from the State Opera. With his “impulsive reaction” to the journalist, the chief choreographer and ballet director violated “all rules of conduct of the Hanover State Opera”, the person concerned was “personally deeply offended” and employees and the audience were “extremely restless”, the State Opera reports.

Goecke is an award-winning choreographer who works on many ballet stages in the Netherlands and abroad. Since 2019, the 50-year-old is ballet director of the Hanover State Ballet, which belongs to the State Opera there. According to the theater, over the course of his career he has already developed more than 60 choreographies, which are part of the repertoire of ensembles from Paris to Berlin to Zurich. Last year he received the German Dance Prize.

Hüster works for the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. The newspaper wrote of a “humiliating act” and a “boundary crossing” that exposed the “disturbed relationship between an artist and criticism”. Police are investigating assault and assault.
