Czech President-designate Petr Pavel was whistled Wednesday night during the opening ceremony of a national ice hockey game in West Bohemian Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad). But not everyone agreed, there was also applause for the politician.
Pavel reacted understandingly to the whistles. More than 40 percent of Czechs voted for his rival, former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, in the presidential election. If some viewers are frustrated that their contestant didn’t win, he totally understands their reaction, Pavel said.
Eggs thrown at it
Another incident occurred in Cheb where an egg was thrown at a car belonging to Pavel’s motorcade. However, it was not directly about the car in which Pavel was sitting. The future head of state reacted with humor and said: “If you throw eggs here that cost seven crowns (0.30 euros) each, then the people of this region will do well.”
Pavel visited the Karlovy Vary (Karlovarský kraj) region on Wednesday and Thursday to talk to the region’s mayors before taking office. This is a region where the majority of voters voted for Babiš in the presidential elections at the end of January. Pavel will take office as head of state on March 9.
