After the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the death toll has now risen to well over 40,000. Despite this, there are still reports of minor miracles. For example, rescuers were able to rescue two young men from the rubble in the city of Antakya after 261 hours on Thursday.
The two were released in the 261st hour after the quake disaster began, state-affiliated broadcaster CNN Türk reported Friday (see tweet below), describing the rescue of the 26 and 34-year-old men as a “double miracle”. The information could not be independently verified.
One of the men immediately urged to call a relative, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted. The person called burst into tears on the phone when he heard about the rescued, as seen on video. After initial treatment in the field hospital, the man is now being treated in hospital, Koca said on Twitter.
Humans can typically survive without water for about 72 hours. According to doctors, those still being rescued must have found some sort of water supply in the rubble. However, the chances of finding earthquake survivors under the rubble are decreasing by the hour.
More than 40,000 dead
The quake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale shook the Turkish-Syrian border area last Monday. The number of confirmed fatalities has now risen to well over 40,000. Turkey has already suspended rescue operations in some regions. Also, search and rescue operations are no longer taking place in the areas of Syria under the control of the government in Damascus.
