French Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt has been caught solving a crossword puzzle during a parliamentary debate on the highly controversial pension reform. “I did something stupid,” the politician admitted to broadcaster BFMTV on Friday.
Since the debate has been going on for two weeks and there are constant interruptions, he picked up the puzzle during a break and then continued.
Heated debates on pension reform
Dussopt has to defend the reform in the National Assembly against heavy criticism. Pension reform is considered one of the most important projects of President Emmanuel Macron. The unions find the project unfair and ruthless. The government wants to gradually increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. In addition, the number of payment years required for a full pension must increase more rapidly.
Conservative MP Aurélien Pradié reprimanded the minister from the lectern on Thursday “not to pull a crossword puzzle like you just did while the national assembly is speaking”.
This is a fundamental issue of respect for Parliament. In France, there have been large demonstrations and strikes against the reform for weeks.
