On Friday, six people were shot dead in a shooting in a small U.S. town in the state of Mississippi, near the state border with Tennessee, authorities said.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Bailey Martin confirmed the killings in Arkabutla, Tate County, to AP News.
“We think he acted alone”
Governor Tate Reeves’ office said he knew about the shooting and a male suspect is in custody. “At this point, we believe he acted alone,” Reeves said in a statement. “His motive is not yet known.”
School on Facebook: “All students are safe”
An elementary and high school in nearby Coldwater were closed while the suspect was being sought, the Coldwater Elementary School’s Facebook page said. A short time later, a second message on the site stated that the lockdown had been lifted and that “all students and staff are safe”.
Arkabutla is located about 30 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee, and has a population of exactly 285, according to the 2020 Census. Nearby Arkabutla Lake is a popular fishing and recreation destination.
