Tragic accident in a Brazilian hospital: A lawyer (40) had put a gun in his mother’s MRI appointment. That cost him his life.
It is a disaster that could have easily been avoided: Brazilian lawyer Leandro Mathias de Novães accompanied his mother to an MRI scan at the Laboratorio Cura in São Paulo.
But he would not part with his gun – despite warnings from staff to remove all metal objects – including jewelry – before entering the MRT room. The 40-year-old simply kept his nine-millimeter pistol in his waistband. This decision cost him his life.
Gun hit MRI machine
The MRI’s magnetic field was so strong that the lawyer pulled his gun from his waistband when he stood about three feet from the machine. The gun was then thrown against the MRI machine and a shot was fired, hitting de Novães in the abdomen. According to Brazilian reports, the mother and medical staff were unharmed. The 40-year-old, who he says is a fan of firearms, spent several weeks in intensive care, where he succumbed to his serious gunshot wounds.
