Former US President Jimmy Carter has opted for palliative home care. The Carter Center announced this on Saturday. After a series of brief hospitalizations, 98-year-old Carter chose to “spend the rest of his time at home with his family” rather than seek further medical treatment.
“He has the full support of his family and medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the condolences of her many admirers,” the center said in a statement shared on Twitter.
Record as longest-lived ex-president
The 98-year-old Carter, who lived longer after leaving the White House than any other former president in US history, was a Democrat and served as the 39th president of the United States from January 1977 to January 1981. His successor was Ronald Reagan.
In recent years, Carter has suffered from several health problems, including melanoma, which has spread to his liver and brain. He responded well to medical treatment. In 2015, he declared himself cancer-free. Carter and his wife Rosalynn, whom he married in 1946, have four children.
