At least seven people have been arrested regarding the discovery last Friday of 18 dead migrants in a truck near Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia.
The Bulgarian public prosecutor’s office, the NOVA agency reports, is studying whether to charge the detainees with murder and involuntary manslaughter after a night-long investigation at the location where the truck was found.
The houses of the detainees have been searched and several people are still being sought, who may already be abroad.
The truck transported 52 people, including children. The survivors have been transferred to hospitals in Sofia and some are in intensive care.
“They were discovered in a hopeless conditionwithout oxygen, wet, freezing and hungry,” the UN agencies complained.
However, all applaud “the swift actions of the relevant authorities, including the hospitals that have provided support and care to the survivors.
“UNICEF, IOM and UNHCR stand ready to assist authorities and survivors and are confident that those responsible for this heinous crime will be brought to justice soon,” they added.
