In Romania, doctors are said to have performed unnecessary heart operations. Implants previously removed from corpses were inserted into the patients. A suspected cardiologist is in custody.
The cardiologist at a hospital in Iasi used a total of 238 medical implants “of unknown origin” between 2017 and 2022, the researchers said. According to the public prosecutor, part of the implants used by the doctor, such as pacemakers or defibrillators, come from deceased patients.
Played with life
By illegally reusing it, he endangered the lives of those affected. The cardiologist is accused of leading a network with at least four other doctors who would have received implants for him.
A large proportion of these surgeries were also medically unfounded, the investigating authority said. “fictitious diagnoses” were given to the patients, and in some cases even cardiac symptoms were deliberately induced in them by the administration of cardiac medication.
Romania spends the least money on its healthcare system compared to the EU. The public system has been repeatedly shaken by scandals and corruption scandals in recent years.
