At least 36 people have died after heavy rainfall hit Brazil’s coastal areas. Hundreds of people are still buried by landslides, authorities said Sunday (local time). São Sebastião was the hardest hit.
Many people spent the carnival weekend there. According to the city council, 60 centimeters of rain fell within 24 hours. Images on television and online networks show entire neighborhoods in the city of São Sebastião being flooded and debris being washed away from homes. Highways are flooded, cars damaged by fallen trees.
Pregnant woman and baby rescued
Amid the sad events, there were also “two miracles,” the São Paulo state government tweeted. A trapped two-year-old and a pregnant woman in labor and her baby were rescued. Hundreds of people are still buried there. Rescuers are currently searching for them and clearing blocked roads. Their work is hampered by further heavy rains.
The storm caused flooding and landslides on Brazil’s Atlantic coast from Saturday. Authorities said at least 36 people were killed and more were feared. Several hundred people became homeless.
The mayor of the city of São Sebastião, Felipe Augusto, spoke of an “extremely critical” situation and had carnival events cancelled. Last year, more than 230 people were killed in flooding and landslides in the southeastern city of Petrópolis.
