No further cooling – 22 degrees: it has never been so warm in the Tyrolean winter

Date:

The 21.7 degrees measured in Innsbruck on Saturday was a record for all winter months since 1877. The average maximum temperature in February is also three degrees higher than the climate average.

Temperature records have existed since the late 19th century. Of course, the mercury column has never climbed as high as on a Saturday in one of the winter months of December, January or February – not in all of Tyrol! “This record was favored by the foehn,” reports meteorologist Andreas Demel of the weather service UBIMET.

Snowdrops are already sprouting from the ground
The almost incredible temperatures do not leave nature untouched. In the provincial capital of Innsbruck, for example, bushes are already starting to bloom and snowdrops are already sprouting here and there – almost a month earlier than usual. At the same time, the cross-country trails in the Leutasch are melting away.

It will become more unstable from Thursday
There won’t be another temperature record for the next week, but the high “Gabriela” will bring us unusual warmth in February nonetheless. “From Monday to Wednesday, the maximum values in the country are between 10 and 17 degrees,” predicts meteorologist Demel. In addition, dry, partly sunny and calm weather awaits us. From Thursday it will be changeable and slightly less soft.

Unbelievable: the average daily high value measured in Innsbruck through Sunday in February is around 10 degrees, three degrees above the 30-year climate average!
