Abandoned alligator caught in New York park

Date:

An alligator was caught in a park in New York City on Monday. The 120 centimeter long animal was found “very lethargic and possibly suffering from cold shock”, the city council of the American metropolis reports Monday (local time).

The gator was later taken to the Bronx Zoo, “thankfully no one was hurt.” The animal was spotted in a pond in Prospect Park on Sunday morning after it was believed to have been abandoned by its owner. The park is a popular place for the Brooklyn boroughs to picnic and walk their pets.

Park visitors were shocked by the alligator’s presence in the pond. “What? An alligator? Okay… oh my god,” Vijay Jacob, a father of two, told the New York Post. “It’s kind of scary because that part is a fun part of the park that kids love to use.”

Park management: ‘No suitable home’
The city government further stated that such urban public spaces “are not suitable homes for animals that are not found in these parks.” The release is not only illegal, but can also lead to the extinction of native species and poor water quality.

The New York Times reports that a handful of alligators are rescued each year in the Big Apple. “Mostly ex-pets who have been abandoned after outgrowing their cuteness,” according to the newspaper.
