As of May 1, 2023, employees in the hospitality industry will receive an average wage and salary increase of 9.3 percent. The new gross minimum wage for unskilled workers is therefore 1800 euros and for specialists in the first two working years 1860 euros.
From May 1, the student income will be 925 euros in the first year, 1035 euros in the second, 1215 euros in the third and 1305 euros in the fourth year, the trade unions GPA and vida announced on Wednesday evening.
“First Necessary Step”
“In any case, this means real wage growth and a first necessary step towards a minimum wage of 2,000 euros for the 230,000 employees in the industry,” emphasized Berend Tusch and Andreas Laaber, chief negotiators of vida and GPA collective agreements.
Despite the agreement on the collective labor agreement (KV) 2023, the employee representatives are upset. “The employers’ representatives in Wednesday’s third (KV negotiation) round could not remember the adjustment of the cost of living of 400 euros,” Tusch denounced “the anything but confidence-building approach of the negotiating partner”.
Still need to catch up
The labor market is a market with supply and demand like any other – according to Tusch, the tourism industry has a lot of catching up to do in the battle for workers. “It remains to be seen whether the concessions from employers will be sufficient to meet the sharply increased demand for workers,” said Tusch and Laaber.
