Unusually violent winter storms swept across parts of the United States on Wednesday, bringing public life to a near standstill in many places. Flights had to be cancelled, households were without power and travel was discouraged.
In a hurricane stretching from the west coast to the Great Lakes on the border with Canada, some 280,000 homes were left without power and more than 1,500 flights had to be canceled by evening, according to energy providers.
Snow warnings have even been issued for normally sunny areas near Los Angeles, California. In contrast, for the state of Minnesota, the National Weather Service warned, “The historic winter storm is likely to make travel impossible.” Only absolutely necessary travel should be undertaken. “If you must travel, carry an extra flashlight, food and water in your car.”
