A large avalanche occurred in the Pitztal on Saturday. From 2:30 p.m. a search was started on Rappenkopf in the municipality of St. Leonhard for possible buried victims. For the time being, however, the situation was unclear.
At Rappenkopf, ski entry points were discovered near the avalanche cone, police confirmed. The avalanche is likely to be “very large” or “very high,” it said. The search therefore takes a lot of time, says police spokesman Stefan Eder.
Two helicopters in use
Several emergency services were involved in the search. In addition to rescue operations in the mountains, two helicopters were also in use. There was a high avalanche danger on Saturday (warning level 4) due to snowfall and strong winds. The avalanche danger is expected to decrease on Sunday; the avalanche warning service has rated it as warning level 3.
