Attack with dog poop – Mannheimer Theater stops choreography by Goecke

Date:

After choreographer Marco Goecke’s dog poop attack, more and more consequences are being drawn. The artist has lost his job at the Hanover State Opera and his plays are no longer performed as planned.

Representatives of the Mannheim National Theater announced that the play Goecke’s “Woke up blind” would no longer be part of a three-part evening in April. “At the moment we have to do without his piece and find peace again to protect and be able to do our actual work,” said dance director Stephan Thoss.

At the same time, he emphasized that Goecke was artistically far ahead of him and many other colleagues. “But the incident is absolutely unacceptable.” Violence of any kind, whether verbal, physical or otherwise, must be rejected. The Bavarian State Ballet in Munich, on the other hand, had announced that two works by Goecke would remain on the programme.

As reported, Goecke smeared a critic of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ) in the foyer of the Hanover Opera House in mid-February with dog feces. The incident happened during a break in the premiere of the play “Faith – Love – Hope”. She had described an earlier production of his as “disgrace and cheek”. The viewers would be “alternately crazy and bored-killed”.

Investigations not yet completed
The Hanoverian State Opera subsequently canceled Goecke’s contract as ballet director by mutual agreement. The investigations against him for bodily harm and insult are still ongoing. In addition to the journalist involved, the FAZ has also filed a report. In the past, Goecke received, among other things, the German Dance Prize. He has been a ballet director in Hanover since 2019 and has already developed more than 60 choreographies.
