Power outages, icy roads, canceled flights: a winter storm has flattened parts of the United States. The Midwest and Northwest of the country were particularly affected. For the first time in more than 30 years, a blizzard warning was also issued for the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Because of the winter storm, there were weather warnings for tens of millions of people. On Friday, the “unusually cold and slow-moving winter storm” will bring very heavy snow and wind to the state of California, the weather service said. The meteorologists also warned of flooding in Southern California.
Unusually high temperatures in the east and south
In other regions, the heavy snowfall and freezing winds would gradually ease. The “record-breaking heat” in the east of the country is now over – but temperatures remained above normal. In the south, temperatures of over 26 degrees were reached, well above normal values for this time of year. According to scientists, climate change is exacerbating drought, heat and extreme weather.
According to media reports, some 2,000 flights were canceled on Thursday and hundreds of thousands of people were temporarily without power. A firefighter died in an operation in the US state of Michigan. He was killed by a falling power line, it said.
