You will never see the sun, never bathe in mud or frolic on fresh grass. Instead, they are fattened up and spend their lives in a giant high-rise complex in a very small space. In Ezhou, China, more than half a million pigs are raised on 26 floors, slaughtered and delivered in portions to hungry customers. Have a good meal!
The 26-storey pig farm in central China’s Hubei province is one of the most modern and largest pig farms in the world. At the beginning of October 2022, we started with 3700 sows. A horror model of the future that could soon set a precedent around the world?
Every year, 1.2 million pigs will be slaughtered here, housed in one building. The reason behind “cost and resource effective” factory farming is the incessant demand. The seemingly insatiable Chinese craving for pork, a key ingredient in many traditional dishes.
Chief Hubei Zhongxin Kaiwei Modern Farming said it originally wanted to invest in ready-to-eat food production but changed its mind after China’s cement and construction industries collapsed, The Guardian reports. Now they have invested in pork production – a lucrative and future-proof business in China.
650,000 animals on 800,000 square meters
Both buildings of the huge building complex are not yet ready for use, but in the future 650,000 animals are to be bred on a total of 800,000 square meters. 30,000 automatic feeding stations take care of the animals. Each floor is controlled for temperature and ventilation and is also under video surveillance.

Waste is used to generate biogas
According to the company, the waste from the pigs is processed and used to produce biogas, which can be used to generate electricity and heat water on the farm. Strict hygiene rules apply within the buildings to prevent the outbreak of epidemics or to limit the risk thereof as much as possible. Employees must go through several rounds of decontamination and testing before they are allowed to enter the premises. They are also not allowed to leave it until the next break.
