The Institute of Cultural Industries and Arts redoubles its support to the visual arts to promote their presence in specialized forums and research projects
The Autonomous Community, through the Institute of Cultural Industries and the Arts (ICA), collaborates with the galleries of the Region of Murcia to promote the promotion of regional artists in various fairs, such as the ARCO 2023 International Contemporary Art Fair, which will be held in Madrid until next Sunday. The galleries of the region promote eight contemporary artists in this professional gathering, notably Sonia Navarro, Miguel Fructuoso, FOD, María Carbonell, Lorenzo Sandoval, Javier Pividal, Ana Martínez and Sergio Porlán.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Tourism, Culture, Youth, Sports and Spokesperson, Juan Antonio Lorca, and the General Director of ICA, Manuel Cebrián, visited the stands of the T20 and Art Nueve galleries, present at ARCO. After the visit, Manuel Cebrián emphasized that ICA’s support for plastic and visual arts has doubled this year, with two new appeals, for a total value of 60,000 euros. One of them was aimed at promoting the presence of galleries in specialized forums, worth 30,000 euros, and the second at economic aid, worth 30,000 euros, aimed at professionals for the development of research, training, production and exhibition of their creations. The conditions to be met in order to benefit from this aid can be consulted in the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia.
As for the new scholarships for professionals, they are aimed at artists who are in an intermediate stage of their career, with an objective trajectory of high and innovative artistic production and who must have carried out at least one individual exhibition outside the territory. Regional in a public or private institution. The application deadlines and requirements can be found in the decision published in the BORM.
Manuel Cebrián stated that “the promotion of cultural consumption is an essential part of the ICA’s strategic plan for this year. That is why we will continue to support them through the call for help, because it is clear how important art galleries are in the sector, which decisively contributes to the consumption of art and creates opportunities to do business”.
The Community contributes to the costs of attending fairs, exhibitions, alternative halls of commercial interest, as well as any initiative, project, event or act promoting regional artists. Hence the importance of the role of the ICA, acting as a link and interrelationship between galleries and Murcian artists, to accommodate them when attending industry events.
ARCO is one of the most important platforms in the contemporary art market. A total of 211 galleries from 36 countries are participating in this edition, of which 170 are part of the overall programme. On this occasion, the participation of Spanish galleries represents 34 percent of the fair, with a total of 71 galleries. For its part, the international segment is at 66 percent, with 140 galleries.
In 2023 it will celebrate its 42nd edition with the Mediterranean as its central project. The program, ‘The Mediterranean: A Round Sea’, curated by Marina Fokidis, and with advice from Bouchra Khalili, Hila Peleg and Pedro G. Romero, will revolve around the artistic scenes of the countries around this sea, from the south to the north and coast to coast. The Center for Documentation and Advanced Studies of Contemporary Art of the Region of Murcia (Cendeac), affiliated with the ICA, will also be present at this international contemporary art showcase, promoting its latest publications. Concretely, the book ‘Habitar la imagen. Domestic and poetic photography of the post-war resistance’, by Mónica Alonso Rivero, with the intervention of the author and Yayo Aznar.
