Conflict researcher Nicole Deitelhoff assumes that a real peace between Russia and Ukraine will take years to come. “It will probably be a generation before we have real peace,” said the head of the Frankfurt Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research.
It would be decades before societies can approach each other again, the scientist said. “There are so many atrocities that need to be addressed. There is so much pain, hurt, anger and hatred.”
“Negative peace not particularly stable”
Laying down arms is not enough for true peace. “This is what we call a negative peace,” the conflict researcher told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Friday). “Of course it is still better than a war. But a negative peace is not particularly stable.”
The danger of the adversaries becoming involved in the next violent conflict is very high – as long as the causes of the conflict are not clarified. “That’s what the war between Russia and Ukraine should be about for us,” emphasized Deitelhoff.
China calls for ceasefire
China recently called for a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine. A highly anticipated position paper released Friday by the foreign ministry in Beijing also calls for an immediate resumption of talks between Russia and Ukraine.
On the first anniversary of the Russian offensive war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky paid tribute to the resistance of his compatriots and reaffirmed confidence in victory.
