Thousands marched with Wagenknecht & Schwarzer for dialogue with Moscow

Date:

Thousands of people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Saturday for a meeting for negotiations with Russia in the war in Ukraine. Left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht and women’s rights activist Alice Schwarzer called for the demonstration. The demonstrators also speak out against arms aid to Ukraine.

“It is already very busy on March 18 Square and people continue to flock to the meeting,” the police tweeted in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the S-Bahn and U-Bahn no longer stopped at the Brandenburg Gate. The police wanted to be present with 1,400 troops on Saturday because of demonstrations in Mitte in connection with the war.

The police spoke of at least 10,000 participants on Saturday afternoon. A spokeswoman for the organizers spoke of about 50,000 participants, and a lot of people turned up.

Leftist counter-protesters
She was assisted by colleagues from Saxony-Anhalt. A police spokesperson reported that there were minor fistfights on the sidelines of the event at the Brandenburg Gate. In addition, according to the police, a group of left-wing counter-demonstrators had a loud argument with the publisher of the “Compact Magazine”, Jürgen Elsässer. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the magazine as a proven far-right effort.

The “Uprising for Peace” rally’s website called on participants to refrain from party and national flags. “Far-right flags, decals and symbols have no place in our rally,” it says.

“Rebellion for Peace”
Left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht and women’s rights activist Alice Schwarzer called for the demonstration under the slogan “Rebellion for Peace”. Two weeks ago, the two published a “Manifesto for Peace” calling on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to “stop the escalation of arms deliveries”. The women’s rights activist and left-wing politician are calling for a ceasefire and peace negotiations with Russia. Critics had accused Wagenknecht and Schwarzer of being “naive”.

Scholz (SPD), Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FPD) also made it clear that they did not share the conviction. One must understand “that the Russian president currently accepts only one form of negotiation, which is for someone to capitulate unconditionally and realize all his goals,” said Scholz. However, on the Internet on Saturday afternoon, more than 640,000 people declared their approval of the “Manifesto”.
