The volunteer fire brigades of the Vorarlberg municipalities of Götzis and Mäder had their hands full on Monday evening. An apartment fire produced such heavy smoke that the Florianis could only get to the seat of the fire with respiratory protection – where they found a man on a couch.
On Monday around 8:05 PM, rescuers in Götzis were notified of smoke on the balcony of an apartment. Due to the increasingly dense clouds of smoke, the 50 Florianis of the Götzis and Mäder fire brigade were only able to enter the apartment with respiratory protection.
When firefighters finally reached the apartment, they found a person in the bank room. After the rescue and first aid, the seriously injured man was taken to the state hospital in Feldkirch. His injuries soon proved so serious that he had to be transferred to the Zurich clinic, which has had a verified special department for burn victims since 2015.
Police said a first responder had inhaled smoke and had to be taken to a hospital.
