After Friday’s devastating storm in the Tyrolean Stubai Valley, the situation became dangerous again on Monday evening: in the valley there were again several mudslides in the course of heavy rain. Among other things, the road to the glacier had to be closed, fields and a carpentry workshop were flooded. The fire brigade was constantly in use. According to the control center, there were storms all over Tyrol. Damage from thunderstorms and mudslides was also reported from Salzburg, Upper Austria and Carinthia.
The fear came true: after the federal state of Tyrol and ZAMG had warned about this on Monday, severe storms hit Tyrol again in the evening. Another hotspot was the Stubai Valley, especially the municipality of Neustift.
Parking lot flooded, car swept away
“In the Mutterberg district next to the valley station of the Stubaier Gletscherbahn Gamsgarten, there was a large mudflow in the area of the Ruetzbach. The parking lot there was under water and a parked private car (see video above, note) was carried away,” reports the police. As a result, the private road to the Stubai Glacier was closed to all traffic around 9 p.m. To date, there have been no reports of injuries.
According to the police, there was also a large debris flow in the Gasteig district. “The bridge affected by this in the area of L232 Ranalter Straße was able to withstand the masses, but the adjacent fields were flooded,” said the director. The fire brigade had to block the road. In addition, the cycle path along the banks of the Ruetz was closed as a bypass option from the “Salzlager”.
Blockades on bridges
The situation is again dangerous in the Oberbergtal, where several mudslides had already taken place on Friday. “Due to the heavy rainfall, the Oberbergbach has carried a lot of water and blocked its bridges,” the police continued. For safety reasons, the Oberberg municipal road was closed from the Mühlenweg intersection.
The river path was also closed from the confluence of the Oberbergbach and the Ruetz to the entrance of the Oberbergtal. “Meanwhile, several spectators had to be instructed to move out of the dangerous areas.”
Water entrance to joinery and music venue
Water also entered a carpentry workshop and a music bar in Neustift and caused water damage. The water was pumped out by the fire brigade. In the municipality of Schönberg, a mudflow has come down in the area of the B183 Stubaitalstraße. The lane had to be closed to all traffic in this area as well.
Not only in the Stubai Valley, but also in other parts of Tyrol, some severe storms moved on Monday evening. According to the control center, the valleys of Achental and Zillertal and East Tyrol were also affected. There were small rocks, fallen trees and water damage.
Heavy damage across the country
Heavy thunderstorms also broke out in parts of Carinthia on Tuesday evening: in the Mölltal several vehicles and their occupants were swept away by a mudflow. Storms are paving the way of destruction in Upper Austria’s Danube Valley. A farmer in Stroheim was hit hardest and his farm was literally cremated. And in Salzburg there was a mudslide in the Lungau due to the heavy rain. A farm was also damaged.
