Unnecessary animal suffering in Kramsach (Tirol): At the Reintalersee it happened twice within a few days that fish hooks got stuck on the heads and beaks of swans. Courageous helpers were able to capture and rescue one specimen, but not yet the second.
When fishermen and swans get in each other’s way, this can end with an animal drama: On the Reintalersee near Kramsach, visitors recently saw a swan with a fishhook between its ear and eye. The cord had apparently been cut. So it is likely that a fisherman noticed the accident – but no report was made to the police or animal welfare organization.
Animal protection worker saved a swan
After the report, Sarah Schauer of the animal protection association for Tyrol drove to the lake. And she even managed to catch the swan, carry it halfway across the water to the car and take it to the animal enclosure in Maurach am Achensee. “I was then able to remove the hook that was dug deep into the flesh,” said Roman Pellegrini, a caretaker at the animal stable.
But because the swan was suffering from the inflammation and high fever, the Watten vet Tanja Isser – a bird specialist – also volunteered for the feathered patient free of charge. “After that, we were able to take the 12-kilo animal to its family at Reintal Lake,” says Pellegrini.
The next winged victim
Hard to believe: After this successful case came the next report from Reintalersee – a swan with a fishing hook and a 20 centimeter long cord in its beak. The dedicated helpers are currently trying to save this animal as well, but it could not be caught for the time being.
