Investigators searched the offices of a former employee of German AfD MP Maximilian Krah in the European Parliament on Wednesday. The raid took place in connection with allegations of influence from Russia. Money is said to have flowed from Moscow to AfD politicians.
According to information from investigative circles, authorities searched Guillaume P.’s offices in Brussels and Strasbourg, as well as his private home in Brussels. According to the Belgian public prosecutor’s office, the investigation is related to the Russian propaganda network surrounding the ‘Voice of Europe’ website.
MPs deny the accusations
According to reports in the Czech media, money allegedly flowed to European politicians via the Prague internet portal. In this context, accusations were also leveled against AfD MP and top candidate Krah and the runner-up on the list, Petr Bystron. Both deny accepting Russian money.
The name of former Krah employee Guillaume P. has also been mentioned in connection with ‘Voice of Europe’. He now works for Dutch MP Marcel de Graaff, who, according to media reports, was already involved in cases involving Russian influence. In the past, Frenchman P. attracted attention with anti-Semitic statements and images. In 2019, he was expelled from the right-wing populist party Rassemblement National after such an incident.
Consequences for AfD
At the beginning of this month, authorities had already searched the rooms of the now arrested Krah employee Jian G., who is accused of spying for China. The AfD (Alternative for Germany) party leadership banned Krah from appearing at party events and largely excluded him from the election campaign. The right-wing populist group ‘Identity and Democracy’ (ID) in the European Parliament ruled out all AfD mandates last Thursday, citing, among other things, Krah.
