Vortex in Graz: – protests and police protection for drag queen lecture

Date:

The blue youth distributed hundreds of posters with photos in clear poses in Graz on Sunday. There were more protests ahead of the sold-out event, and police were also on the scene just to be on the safe side…

A frog who wants to become a ballet dancer. Impossible, a pair of swans are convinced. A meeting with a ballet teacher encourages him: even if the frog does not meet the swans’ ideal of beauty, she supports his wish.

Of children’s stories and perversions
That is what the story that was read on Sunday afternoon in the Green Party House is about. Why is the courageous story so shocking and why did the police have to show up? For two men in women’s clothes read it to the children. It took no more than that to unleash a wave of outrage in certain circles in Graz.

Before the Saturday lecture by the transvestite artists Gloria Hole and Candy Licious at the Greens’ party headquarters, it was hard to escape the bickering of the media. The Freedom Youth followed on Sunday and hung hundreds of posters throughout the city center. It features photos from Gloria Hole’s Instagram page in explicit poses, with “Protect your children from perversions” written underneath.

“Bow Is Tense Today!”
“Resist the beginning! Such an event, which is rejected by a majority of Grazers, let’s not take place without comment,” says Matthias Lehner, chairman of the city youth.

“It actually went too far today,” says Gloria Hole, “because people actively took to the streets and started hate speech against me.” Green alderman and co-organizer Anna Slama also points the posters “in the direction of hate speech”. Why the police would have removed them all before the reading started.

Few protests for out-of-print literature
And probably because of the unrest, there was also an increased presence around the party headquarters. There, however, only a few passers-by protested with posters: “II am christian. Children should not be taught that there is a third gender. Children should decide for themselves, parents should not push them in the wrong direction at a young age just because it is beautiful and colorful,” said one woman explaining her point of view.

The children seemed uninterested in the whole discussion: “What a beautiful princess,” one little girl, like some 50 other children and adults at the sold-out lecture, rejoiced, straining at Gloria Hole’s made-up lips as she walked away from the Frog started telling in “Swan Pond”.
