When construction workers reached the foundation during renovation work on a residential building in the municipality of Eberndorf in Carinthia, they suddenly noticed strange debris in the concrete.
It soon turned out that these were bones hidden in the foundation of the house. Was it just a hapless animal that got lost in the concrete mixer at an awkward moment, or were these signs of a previously hidden crime? “After an initial investigation by the Carinthian police, it became clear that human bones were involved,” the police confirmed. “To clarify how old these were, the archaeological service was also consulted.”

The archaeologists quickly learned that a possible violent crime took place a long time ago and that a possible perpetrator is no longer among the living. “The bones date from the 19th century,” police said. “So they no longer fall under our area of responsibility – a possible crime has long since expired.”
