An Israeli ministerial committee today gave preliminary approval to a law, promoted by the far-right Jewish Power Party, that would allow Palestinians to carry out attacks on Israeli Jews punishable by death.

This measure, included in the coalition agreements of the current government, the most right-wing in Israel, and which must be approved five more times before coming into effect, would imply a historic change in the Jewish state with regard to the death penalty, which it is not used for 60 years.

The text of this law, subject to revision in each of the following cases, stipulates that this punishment shall be applied to those who deadly attacks against Israelis with racist or hateful motives and with the aim of harming the State of Israel.

The provisional approval comes after an attack this Sunday in the north of the occupied West Bank in which a Palestinian killed two Israelis with a gun, and in the context of a significant escalation of violence in the area.

Our response to terror is attack terror with violence and deepen our roots in our country,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the measure was passed.

On the other hand, Itamar Ben Gvir, Minister of National Security and leader of the Jewish Power Party, has indicated that in response to today’s attack there is “nothing more symbolic than the passage of the death penalty law for terrorists”.
