A shredded chicken – horror photos from an AMA certified slaughterhouse

Date:

Thousands of chickens are slaughtered every day in Styrian slaughterhouses. Terrible images now reach us from one. Consequences are essential.

We still have terrible memories of the most recent photos of chicken farms in Styria: where little chicks were simply trampled, chickens killed or crushed with a dump truck. Without any empathy, without any respect for life.

One would have to assume that since then all industry efforts have been aimed at immediately righting such egregious wrongs; if only to somehow save the reputation of Styrian meat and the AMA seal of approval.

Not even close. Once again horror images were sent to the Verein gegen Tierfabriken (VGT), this time from a slaughterhouse in Styria, also with the AMA seal of approval. They would have been recorded in October and November 2022.

The cruelty towards the completely defenseless animals can hardly be put into words. One is apparently bewildered along with congeners; it fights for its life by desperately gasping for breath. Another is attached to the wing and struggles in the air for who knows how long. A small chicken runs for its life, is brutally kicked against the wall as it tries to catch it and its head is slammed against a container; it lives on for some time among dead conspecifics. This scene alone shows that these animals are no longer considered pain-sensitive creatures: a worker wipes his robe with a chicken. Like with a rag.

As a reminder: Styrians will later find such chickens on their plates as a delicacy.

After reviewing the extensive material, the VGT, led by David Richter, filed a complaint, partly because of the seriousness of the animal torture.

Naturally, we also asked the relevant slaughterhouse for their opinion. It came directly from the lawyer, who points out that the company has put in place a comprehensive protection and control system to ensure that all legal and official regulations are followed. It would also be in the company’s interest to “participate in the full and above all correct clarification of the facts”.

According to the video, the “violation of animal protection regulations by two employees of the company” was unacceptable to management. One would have already left the company, the second would have employment law consequences.
