A smuggler fled from the police in Kittsee in Burgenland. He lost control and the car overturned, killing three people. Now the Chechens had to answer to the court in Eisenstadt.
Adam K. crammed no less than 22 illegal immigrants into a van that was no longer roadworthy to take them to Austria. When he was checked entering Kittsee from Slovakia, the stateless Chechen initially cooperated, gave officials his passport and got out of the vehicle.
Run away from the police
“The car seemed suspicious to us,” a police officer said in court on Tuesday. The officers asked K. to open the hold: “Then he quietly went back to the driver’s cabin and pretended to take the key. But he got in and stepped on the gas. I tried to pull him out of the starting car, but that failed,” said the officer. K. himself was “ice cold” and snatched his passport from the officer’s hand to avoid identification. Then he sped off, followed by the police patrol.
Fatal accident after chase
After two kilometers the car overturned and the occupants were thrown out. Sad result: three dead, including a young mother, 19 injured, some seriously. A police officer: “At first you only saw dust because it was summer and the ground was dry. When the dust settled, the drama of the situation became clear.” The agents outgrew themselves.
Although there were only two of them, they managed to treat the injured, call in more emergency services and apprehend the fleeing smuggler. Several ÖAMTC emergency helicopters and Red Cross vehicles took the victims to hospitals. The fire brigade and the management were also involved on a large scale.
At the trial in Eisenstadt, smuggler Adam K. presented himself as a kind of “business class” smuggler, even making extra meal and prayer breaks for the “passengers”. Anyway, the only blame for the crash was the police, who “pushed him off”, which, according to witness statements, turned out to be an outright lie. His statement about the pauses should also be placed in fairy territory. Because the migrants who were dragged along had already reported to the police that the driver had not taken any breaks. In the cramped, stuffy van, the people being dragged were terrified and short of breath.
Prayer for clemency
During the deliberations on the sentencing, the pious man suddenly began to pray in the courtroom. It was no use. The Senate imposed a six-year unconditional prison sentence. In addition, K. must pay 10,000 euros in compensation to the family that lost their mother.
Immediately after the verdict was announced, the defendant complained through an interpreter that he had not received a “partial verdict” and explained that he would make a “full appeal” to his public defender as the verdict was too harsh for him. The public prosecutor also appealed – they would like to see the unscrupulous human smuggler behind bars for more than six years.
