A bear sighting has been reported in the Tyrolean community of Breitenbach am Inn (Kufstein district). A rider noticed a brown bear near a forest path, according to media reports or on the municipality’s website. Incidents involving the large carnivores have been on the rise recently.
The bear got up, hissed and then chased the fleeing rider, Breitenbach’s deputy mayor Adi Moser described. According to the deputy sheriff, no livestock has been damaged by a predator so far. Last Thursday was the first sighting of a bear in the Breitenbach area.
Residents “have to watch out”
The brown bear sighting was also announced on the Breitenbach community website. “I didn’t mean to cause panic, but I’m warning people. You definitely have to be careful,” Moser said.
Tips for correct behavior
The state of Tyrol has several tips on what to do if you encounter a bear:
- If you see a bear, try to be as calm as possible! Stop and get the bear’s attention by speaking loudly in a firm, calming voice and controlled body movements (but not towards the bear!). This is to make it easier for the bear to recognize you as a human. Don’t run away or try to approach him. Also, do not throw objects at the bear. Drop the bear snap, retreat slowly and calmly.
- Once a bear recognizes humans as food suppliers, it loses its fear of human scents. Therefore: Never feed a bear! This can easily happen unintentionally, for example by eating leftovers during a walk zB leave banana peels.
- If you see a bear cub, move away slowly, do not approach it under any circumstances! Not even if it seems orphaned or curious. The mother is almost certainly nearby and will defend her cub.
- If the bear stands up, it is not a threatening gesture. Bears get up to explore and get an overview. This moment is good for people to get attention.
- Bears usually only attack to defend themselves because they are surprised or provoked. Bear attacks are very rare and most attacks are dummy attacks. The bear runs towards the human and stops a few meters in front of the human. He turns around, runs away again and at most repeats the feint. However, it’s usually hard to tell if it’s a feint or not.
Bear incidents are piling up
In recent times, bear sightings and incidents involving the large carnivores have increased. At the end of May, in the morning hours on Tuesday, there is a bear near the Schwarzach-St. Veit was hit by a train and killed in Salzburg’s Pongau. At the beginning of May, a DNA sample was used to identify a bear in a sheep kill in the Tyrolean Wildschönau (Kufstein district). There was also a bear alert in Wildschönau in mid-May and in St. Anton in early June.
In Slovakia, a walker with a dog was attacked by a brown bear on Friday. The man first fired two shots in the air with a pistol to scare the animal away. As the bear approached the man within three feet, he fired ten shots – the last one was fatal.
