Italian police have identified a young Swiss woman who allegedly carved the first letter of her name into a wall in Rome’s Colosseum on Friday. The investigation began after an Italian tour guide used his smartphone to film the woman making an “N”.
The guide accompanying a group touring the Colosseum was alerted to the crime by a tourist. He reported the matter to the Coliseum’s security personnel.
There is a threat of a fine of 15,000 euros
The Swiss tourist now risks a fine of up to 15,000 euros for defaming and damaging cultural heritage.
Similar incident a few weeks ago
A few weeks ago, another similar incident happened, which caused outrage from Culture Minister Gennaro Sangennaro. A young tourist of Bulgarian origin living in England had carved his name and that of his girlfriend on a wall of the Colosseum.
A video that appeared on the Internet caused a wave of outrage. The Bulgarian, who has since filed a report, apologized, but that didn’t save him a hefty fine.
