The 46-year-old Styrian police officer, who reportedly killed his boss with three shots at his post on Monday, is likely to be taken into custody on Wednesday.
The 46-year-old had already been transferred to the Leoben Justice Center on Tuesday evening. During the interrogations, the possible motive also became clear: the commander had addressed him about alleged dereliction of duty. Then the shots were fired, said Thomas Mühlbacher, head of the Leoben public prosecutor’s office.
“Talk slowly”
“It wasn’t a real argument, just a quiet discussion,” Mühlbacher said in the APA interview. It was about a possible dereliction of duty, forcing the 59-year-old commander to question his lower-ranking colleague. “An official act should not have been recorded,” Mühlbacher affirmed. The conversation remained silent, then the 46-year-old went outside and returned a moment later to the commander’s room with his service weapon.
The policeman then asked his superior if there was another way to settle things. “When the answer was ‘no’, he shot,” says Mühlbacher. “So there was a turning point between the conversation and the shots,” emphasized the head of the prosecutor’s office. The 46-year-old was then arrested without resistance by a colleague present and is said to have said: “I shot the boss.”
Assessments must provide information
A psychiatric report should provide information about “what was going on in the man at the moment,” Mühlbacher continued. The Public Prosecution Service has so far said nothing about possible previous deviations of the suspect. “But I assume that if there are any, they will be handed over during the investigation.”
According to information from “Krone”, the police officer was said to have been “manic-depressive” and also expressed suicidal thoughts. This would have been reported to the authorities. There is also talk of possible blunders in official actions.
