The little mermaid, the symbol of the Danish capital Copenhagen, has been defaced by unknown people in the colors of the Russian flag. The stone on which the bronze figure sits is painted with three broad stripes in white, blue and red.
Danish media footage showed the insult on Thursday morning. The paint was removed by cleaners in the morning.
Been the target of vandals several times
The Little Mermaid has been defaced, deformed and sometimes badly damaged several times. The character was created in 1913 based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen. It is one of the most popular sights in Copenhagen. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine a year ago, many Ukrainian flags have been flying in the city.
