With spaghetti on his ears, Russian regional politician Mikhail Abdalkin followed Putin’s confused speech to the nation and posted a video of it online. He now faces severe criminal penalties.
There is a deeper message behind the action, which seems strange to us Austrians. Because in Russian the phrase “hang noodles on your ears” means to tell tall tales.
Although the noodle satire was well received by some netizens, the police have now filed an administrative complaint against the MP for “discrediting” the military, which is punishable by imprisonment. The documents will be examined by the court on March 7, according to the Russian newspaper Kommersant.

On February 22, Abdalkin posted a video on social media of himself listening to Vladimir Putin’s speech to the Federal Assembly with spaghetti on his ears.
“Total support, total approval, great speech. I haven’t heard anything like it in 23 years. I am pleasantly surprised,” the deputy from the Samara region wrote with the clip, which he posted on YouTube and on the Russian social media platform Vkontakte.
