During private woodwork, the 71-year-old was sawing a 35-meter-high spruce tree at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday in Schoppernau on 43-degree steep terrain. According to police information, when the tree began to buckle, the pensioner must have changed his standing position, slipped in the wet terrain and then slid 35 meters down the steep slope.
When the victim’s son, who was also working with wood nearby, received no response from his father when he screamed, he checked and found the injured man motionless on the ground.
The son immediately began CPR attempts, which the emergency services continued moments later. The rescue helicopter “Robin 1” transported the victim of the accident to the regional hospital in Feldkirch. The 71-year-old succumbed to his injuries.
