In hospital care – Eleven-year-old is the first case of measles in Upper Austria

Date:

An 11-year-old girl is currently seriously ill at Kepler University Hospital in Linz after being infected with measles. This was the first case in Upper Austria this year. A total of 33 confirmed measles cases have been reported in Austria this year through the Electronic Reporting System (EMS).

Measles alert in Upper Austria! As in some other federal states, the first confirmed cases of measles have now also occurred in Upper Austria.
Nationally, a total of 33 proven cases have been registered this year. An outbreak from Styria is currently the strongest.

Three other family members affected
The danger of the disease is particularly evident in the case of the eleven-year-old Upper Austrian, as the child has to be treated in the normal ward at Kepler University Hospital in Linz. Thanks to a mild course of the disease, three other family members are currently isolated at home alone.

Vaccination is strongly recommended
Experts now urgently recommend vaccination against measles, as the consequences of this highly contagious disease can even be fatal.

Highly contagious disease
“Decades of experience show that measles vaccination is safe and effective. It has been developed to prevent serious forms of progression and is therefore highly recommended,” emphasizes Wolfgang Högler, head of MedCampus IV (children’s hospital).
