A telephone scammer targeted Toni Elsenhuber from Salzburg. The Flachgauer saw through the perpetrators and turned the tables. Finally, a con artist’s handcuffs clicked.
“Daddy, Daddy, I killed someone,” the hysterical voice yelled from Toni Elsenhuber’s phone. The 40-year-old from Hof received a phone call last Thursday that started like this. The voice of the woman on the other end of the line was crying. But Toni Elsenhuber had to laugh. He immediately saw through the game being played on the phone. There were phone scammers on the line. “Everyone is talking about this phone scam now,” he says, adding, “I also have a Dachshund, not a daughter.”
“Inspector” Franke demanded 500,000 euros
Elsenhuber agreed to the phone call with the fraudsters and disguised his voice. “I wanted to make them run.” The funeral speaker was at Schoosleitner’s funeral in Thalgau. He had Kurt Schoosleitner’s telephone conversation filmed and at the same time notified the police.
A supposed policeman took command and introduced himself as Commissioner Franke. He asked for bail of 500,000 euros. Elsenhuber negotiated with the scammers. The police knew everything. A meeting place for the afternoon was set in the church in Hof. A court officer will identify himself on the spot.
Handover with disguise and cane
Elsenhuber rushed from Thalgau to Hof and took clothes from his father-in-law. “I had to embody the old man, with a bent barrel and a walking stick.” Around 3.45 pm a taxi with a woman appeared, got out and took the bag with the wrong 332,500 euros from Elsenhuber. “These were old and misprinted death photos, not real money,” the funeral speaker said.
When the crooks’ accomplice tried to get back into the taxi, the handcuffs clicked. “It was just like in the movies, the police were everywhere.” Even though the agents are still looking for moneylenders: Toni Elsenhuber unmasked the criminals and thus turned from victim to hero.
