The US is providing new military aid worth US$400 million (approximately €377 million) to Ukraine to defend it against Russian forces. The package contains ammunition, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Friday.
The ammunition is for US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and howitzers, as well as Bradley armored cars. According to Washington, Ukraine is already “effectively using these weapons for defense”.
Washington’s main Kiev ally
The United States is considered Ukraine’s main ally in defense against the Russian invasion. According to the latest information from the Pentagon, US military aid since the start of the war has totaled more than $32 billion (the equivalent of about $30.1 billion), not including the new package.
On Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wanted to discuss the war in Ukraine during a working meeting with US President Joe Biden in Washington. The two are also likely to look ahead to the future strategy of Western allies in Ukraine.
The US also supplies Abram’s main battle tanks
In late January, after much back-and-forth and parallel to Germany’s deployment of Leopard tanks to Kiev, the US government also announced that it would deliver 31 M1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine. Their deployment is expected to take some time.
Recently there have been conflicting accounts from the White House and the German Chancellery in Berlin about how the promise of main battle tanks to Ukraine came about.
