Sloppy construction – After Turkey earthquake: 768 suspects in sight

Date:

In connection with the earthquake disaster, investigations have been launched against 768 suspects in Turkey so far. Among the suspects are mainly construction companies and, according to current information, also the mayor of the heavily damaged municipality of Nurdagi. However, for many in the country, this does not go far enough.

So far, 237 people have been arrested, state news agency Anadolu Ajansi reported on Friday.

More than 200,000 buildings destroyed
According to government figures, more than 200,000 buildings were destroyed by the earthquake. Turkey has had strict building regulations regarding earthquake safety for more than 20 years. One reason for the great destruction, however, is that these were not adhered to and circumvented through botched construction and corruption. According to the Turkish Chamber of Architects, about 50 percent of collapsed buildings were built after 2001.

Critics in the country also complain that the investigations at the political level have so far barely drawn circles and have cost no one their office.

Dog rescued from rubble
Meanwhile, more than three weeks after the devastating quakes in Turkey, crisis workers rescued a dog from the rubble. The white terrier was rescued from the rubble in the city of Antakya. He was able to find food under the rubble and therefore survived, according to the emergency services.
