A 19-year-old woman disappeared on Sunday evening during a noisy birthday party in Lower Saxony. After a joint search of partygoers, she was found seriously injured in a meadow. Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. The police are investigating a murder. A 20-year-old suspect is already in custody.
Due to the situation in which they were found, the investigators assume both murder and a sex crime. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the first interrogations in the night provided clues about the 20-year-old German. “The suspect was arrested in his apartment in the morning,” said chief prosecutor Alexander Retemeyer on Sunday. He initially did not want to comment on what happened. He was produced before a magistrate on Sunday.
According to investigators, the autopsy of the body began on Sunday. However, no results are expected in the short term, according to Retemeyer. The public prosecutor did not want to give any further details about the circumstances of the death of the German victim, referring to possible knowledge of the perpetrator. According to initial findings, the site was celebrating an 18th birthday. Details – such as the possible relationship between the perpetrator and the victim – were initially not disclosed by the detectives. The two were among the partygoers.
150 guests had to be questioned
With a large contingent, the police detained about 150 guests that evening in the Schützenhalle, where the celebration took place, to record personal data and conduct initial investigations. Photos were taken of everyone who was still present. The Federal Agency for Technical Assistance and the fire brigade supported the detectives, for example by lighting up the alleged crime scene. According to the police, young partygoers were cared for on site by several assistant pastors until Sunday afternoon.
In fact, within days the small community was making headlines again. Last Tuesday, a deadly gun attack on a 16-year-old caused horror. An 81-year-old man shot the boy in front of an apartment building. The 16-year-old died of his injuries in a hospital on Wednesday evening.
