Shoigu at the front – Russian Defense Minister visited Mariupol

Date:

As part of an inspection tour of the Donbass, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, which was destroyed when it was taken by Moscow forces in the spring of 2022. There he supervised the work of the construction brigades.

The video footage shows the 67-year-old in a newly built hospital and in front of the civil defense building. He also received reports about the construction of a water pipeline from the Rostov region in southern Russia to the Donetsk region.

It is Shoigu’s second visit in days to the Ukrainian region of Donetsk, which was partially annexed by Russian forces, after he reportedly visited the front there over the weekend.

Photos are in the Propaganda material
The photos should demonstrate the activity and care of the Russian leadership. Criticism has recently grown that those responsible in Moscow are only waging the war from their cabinets and are not paying attention to the concerns of the soldiers and the local population, whom Russia had liberated as it saw fit.

Despite extensive destruction, the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol is important to Russian forces because it is on a major supply route. Russia captured many Ukrainian soldiers during the capture of Mariupol.

The Siege of Mariupol
In March, the Russian army destroyed a theater in Mariupol, the basement of which Ukrainians say families had salvaged. Satellite photos show “Children” written on the floor in front of the building. Russia bombed the building anyway, Ukraine said. Hundreds of people were killed. Russia says the incident was staged but offers no evidence. The theater was demolished in December of the previous year.

Siege was “hell”
Aid convoys then attempted to evacuate the civilian population. The Red Cross describes the three-month siege of Mariupol as hell.

For weeks, civilians and soldiers were the last to stand in the huge Azovstal steelworks. In mid-May, the civilians were brought to safety, the fighters of the Azov regiment surrendered. The Ukraine left the largely destroyed port city to the Russian troops.
